Australian Shepherds have been growing in popularity for the last few years. Currently, they’re ranked number 17 out of all the dog breeds currently registered. Despite the name, these canines are actually a European breed that was exported to Australia and then California, where they were perfected by cowboys.
While these dogs were originally bred for hard days working in the fields, they are increasingly finding themselves as pets for active families. If you’ve recently adopted an Australian Shepherd of your own, we’ve collected an assortment of fitting names for you to choose from.

Which Name Did You Pick?
With such a huge list of names, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to sort through them. There are literally hundreds of names on this list, so take a deep breath and browse through them at your own pace. If there are others in your family, have them search through the list as well. Naming should be a family affair.
Besides that, there aren’t too many rules involved in dog naming. You should choose a name you like and one that is fitting for your canine. Whatever name you choose should not sound like anyone else’s name or any commands your dog is going to be learning.
Names should be short, or you should at least have a nickname to use for training purposes. Long names are more difficult for dogs to learn and can take longer to say then you need them to, especially in an emergency recall situation. You don’t want to have to shout out “Mr. Barktoven the fifth” when your dog is running towards a road.
