Great Danes are known for being gentle giants. They can be as tall as 32 inches at the shoulder, making them larger than almost every other dog breed out there. While their large size makes them less common than many other breeds, they do rank 16th on the American Kennel Club’s popularity ranking.
Despite this dog’s gentle demeanor, they were actually bred to be guard dogs, hence their huge size. They bond closely with their family and are great with children. But, they can also be quite fierce and courageous when they need to be.
If you’ve adopted one of these gentle but powerful dogs, choosing a name can be difficult. Obviously, this dog’s size tends to be the major source of inspiration for Great Dane dog names. However, these dogs have quite a few other characteristics that provide plenty of naming inspiration as well.
Male Great Dane Names
These gentle giants deserve a name that matches their gentle disposition and giant size. Luckily, most traditional names are fitting for a Great Name. Names like “Charlie” can make these canines sound laidback and regal. With that said, there are often many not-so-traditional naming options as well, like “Diesel.”

When selecting a name for your pooch, you might want to consider making a short list of your favorite names and taking a few days to try each name out.
