The Best Dog Food for Beagles

If you want the best of the best, this is the food to get. It is made with completely fresh main ingredients and delivered right to your door in pre-portioned bags. It comes pre-cooked, so it does not require any prep on your part.  It’s easy on your dog’s digestive system.

There are a few different formulas available, but we reviewed the beef mash in particular. The first ingredient in this formula is real meat ground beef – and you can tell just by looking at the food! After this, there is a number of veggies and eggs. Eggs are a great source of protein and amino acids; they’re a very suitable option for any dog.

Many of the veggies included in this recipe are high-quality. But, peas are listed as the fifth ingredient. Peas have been linked to dietary-related heart problems in dogs by the FDA. The link is still under investigation and the exact mechanism that causes this heart problem is unknown. However, it is possible that it is because peas are low in taurine, which is an amino acid necessary for heart health.

With that said, this food contains quite a bit of meat and the bulk of the protein likely comes front the beef. Because of that, we did not mark this food down for the inclusion of peas.

The macronutrient content of this food was quite good. Protein and fat are both decently high, with carbohydrates on the lower end.  Highly recommend!

Good Dog Food for Beagles

This dog food by Merrick contains many different meat sources, including beef, pork, and turkey. Dogs typically develop food allergies when they eat too much of a single protein. Their bodies lose the ability to break it down over time, which causes their immune system to attack the protein like it is a foreign invader.

This food contains many different meat sources. Because of this, your dog is not going to be eating tons of any one meat. This helps prevent allergies and is a great option for dogs who do not currently have any allergies.

Besides the large amount of meat, this dog food also contains many different vegetables, including peas and potatoes. These aren’t the best choice since they have been linked to certain heart problems by the FDA. However, there is a lot of meat included on the ingredient list, making this food an overall good choice.

The macronutrient breakdown of this food is pretty good. Protein is extremely high at 42%, which is exactly what we like to see. Fat is somewhat low, however. We would have preferred to see fewer carbohydrates and more fat.

Instinct Raw Boost Grain-Free Recipe With Real Beef

  • Freeze-dried raw bites
  • Probiotics included for digestive health
  • Free of grain, potato, corn, wheat, soy, artificial colors, and preservatives

Doggypedia rating: 5/5

Calorie Content: 4351 kcal/kg

First 5 Ingredients: Beef, chicken meal, white fish meal, peas, chicken fat.

Macronutrients (Dry-Matter Basis):

  • 39.59% Protein
  • 23.08% Fat
  • 28.57% Carbohydrates

Featuring freeze-dried bites, this dry food is the perfect option for any adult Beagle. It includes a high amount of meat, including beef, chicken, and whitefish. This large variety of meats helps prevent allergies from developing and ensures your canine is getting complete nutrition. Different meats contain different nutrients and levels of amino acids, so it is important to vary your pet’s diet.

The only veggie included in the first five ingredients is peas. This veggie contains a lot of protein, but not all the amino acids your pet needs. This might cause certain heart problems if your pet gets the bulk of their protein from peas. However, there are quite a bit of meat items in the ingredient list as well, so your pet will likely get all the amino acids they need.

This food is a bit more expensive than most. However, the calorie content is decently higher. This means your pet will likely need to eat less of this food, so you could potentially save more in the long-run.

The macronutrient content of this food is great. Protein is at nearly 40%, and fat is pretty high as well. Carbohydrates could be lower, but it is not high enough for us to mark this food down.

Best Weight Loss Food for Beagles

Beagles are prone to becoming overweight. This is largely because they tend to become quite sedentary as they get older, which can make them gain weight. These health issues can become worse if your Beagle is carrying around extra weight.

This food is specifically designed to help your dog lose weight. It contains 11 different types of meat, increasing the variety of your pet’s diet, and preventing allergies. The first five ingredients are all meat besides tapioca starch, which is a starch used to hold the dry food together.

The macronutrient content of this food is very good. Protein is almost at 50%, which is one of the highest on the market. Fat is somewhat low, but this food is designed for weight loss so that is expected.

The only negative about this food is that Blue Buffalo, the manufacturer of this dry food, is known for having lots of recalls. For this reason, we had to mark this food down a bit.

How to Choose the Best Dog Food for Your Beagle

Beagles thrive on a similar diet as most other dogs. They do best on high-quality ingredients and diets that consist mostly of meat. Fillers should be avoided, including white grains and filler veggies like peas and potatoes.

It is in your best bet to avoid artificial additives as well, like colors and flavorings. Added vitamins and minerals are okay, as they help ensure your dog’s nutritional needs are met.

Grain-inclusive food is not necessarily a bad choice, especially if your dog does not seem sensitive to grains. Grain-free dog food has been linked to some health problems by the FDA, likely because grain-free foods typically use lots of peas and other cheap veggies as fillers.

Studies have found that dogs choose a diet consisting of about 30% protein, 63% fat, and 7% carbohydrates when given control of their diet. Preferably, the dog food you feed your beagle should be as close to this as possible.

Sadly, it can be very difficult to find foods that match this macronutrient breakdown. However, it is still important to select foods that are high in fat and protein – even if you can’t find food that matches this criterion exactly.

Beagles are prone to some spinal problems, which can be made worse by obesity. For this reason, it is essential to keep their weight in check. This may mean switching to a diet dog food a few times in their life.

While Beagles are small, they aren’t so small that they need a “small breed” dog food. They can typically eat normally sized kibble bits.

Best Dog Food for Beagle Puppies

Your Beagle puppy’s nutrition is extremely important. They are growing and developing every day, so it is vital that their body is fueled with the proper nutrients.

This puppy food contains all of those vital nutrients and then some. It includes deboned beef as the first ingredient and uses beef broth instead of water, increasing the nutritional value of the food. Because it is canned food, many puppies will find it easier to eat.

Besides the meat, this food also contains peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, and a number of other veggies. Some of these vegetables are great options, while others leave something to be desired. Vegetables like sweet potatoes are very starchy, and peas have been linked to heart problems in dogs by the FDA, though they are still investigating the exact biological mechanism that makes this heart disease happen.

For the high amount of peas and starchy vegetables, we had to mark this food down a bit.

How Much to Feed Your Beagle

You should always follow the feeding guidelines on the package of your dog’s food. Each dog food has a different amount of calories in it, which will affect how much you need to feed your dog.

In order to feed your dog the proper amount, you will need to know how much they weigh. It is vital to get an accurate weight measurement, otherwise, you’ll be feeding your dog the wrong amount of food. The easiest place to do this is the vet’s office.

If you suspect your dog is overweight, visit the vet. They can ensure there isn’t an underlying problem causing your dog’s weight gain, such as a thyroid disorder. They can also provide you with more accurate feeding directions to help your pooch lose weight.

In these situations, you may need to switch to a weight-loss food to help your pooch take the pounds off. These foods are designed to fill your pooch up without adding extra calories to their diet. They usually use lots of protein and fiber to help with this.

Though it may be tempting, you should not leave your Beagle’s food out and allow them to eat until they are “full”. This can cause excessive weight gain, especially in Beagles.

On top of feeding your pooch the correct amount, be sure they are getting plenty of exercise as well. Sadly, Beagles tend to be quite lazy and will not get the proper amount of exercise if left to their own devices.
